Second Judicial District Court judges have selected Patrick Sauter as the recipient of the 2016 Pro Bono Award. The award will be presented at the Ramsey County Bar Foundation Bench & Bar Benefit on November 5, 2016.

The Pro Bono Award is presented each to year to an attorney who has performed exceptional pro bono service for the benefit of residents of the Second Judicial District.

Tubman nominated Sauter for this year’s award. Sauter is an attorney at Bassford Remele, where he practices commercial litigation, construction law, personal injury and product liability. He has provided pro bono representation through Tubman for more than a decade. He served as a volunteer attorney through Tubman’s Pro Bono Safety Project, which provides pro bono legal representation to low-income victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking. The project provides volunteer attorneys to low-income individuals seeking orders for protection and harassment restraining orders.

Shiloh Bute, staff attorney at Tubman, stated “Mr. Sauter’s willingness to serve and represent victims of violence is unparalleled in our volunteer program. He has represented over 120 victims over many years, including 20 clients last year in protective order cases.”

The unusually large number of cases Mr. Sauter takes on is only part of the reason for his nomination for this award. Bute noted that Sauter takes cases regardless of difficulty or barriers and frequently takes cases that require the use of interpreters, with complicated legal issues, or that demand immediate attention. He encourages colleagues at his firm to participate and has helped train countless attorneys in Tubman’s volunteer attorney program. Bute noted that “over the past 12 years, he has helped the Safety Project become what it is today and we are extremely grateful.”

The 41th Annual Bench & Bar Benefit will be held at the InterContinental St. Paul Riverfront Hotel on Saturday, November 5. Proceeds of the benefit will be distributed to local legal organizations through the Ramsey County Bar Foundation. Registration for the event is available at ramseybar.org.
