Real Estate Section: Railroad Real Estate Fundamentals

Learn the basics about railroad real estate, including background on the establishment and documentation of railroads, federal and state land grants, railroad deeds, eminent domain, contracts, and more.

*David Drach retired at the end of August as the Director of Real Estate – U.S. for Canadian Pacific Railroad in its Minneapolis office. While there, he oversaw real estate transactions for the railroad’s U.S. lines and properties encompassing 15 states in the Midwest and Northeast U.S. He held a number of positions in the Real Estate Department since beginning his employment with Soo Line Railroad Company in 1984. In the fall of 2018, Drach will start a solo practice, based in Ramsey County, assisting clients with railroad real estate issues.
Drach received his Bachelors of Science degree in Computer Science from Augsburg College in Minneapolis and his Juris Doctor from William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul. He is a member of the City of Saint Paul Task Force studying the redevelopment of Ford Motor Company’s Twin Cities Assembly Plant and a Past President of the American Railway Development Association, a national organization that focuses on industrial development, real estate environmental concerns of North American railroads.
